Women's Soccer Team Defends Barkeater Cup Title

The ESF women's soccer team prevailed in the fourth annual Barkeaters Cup game against Paul Smith's College Oct. 10. The game was played while the Paul Smith's College community mourned the loss of men's soccer team Captain Mark A. "Max" Calderone, who died tragically the night before the game. The women's soccer team wore black armbands in a tribute to Calderone.

The Mighty Oaks scored early, at the 38th minute, with a quick shot in the box by freshman Rachel Truska. A few minutes later, senior Bridget Cuddihy followed up with another goal, her 11th goal of the season. Cuddihy then made the score 3-0 with a beautiful chip shot goal at the 26th minute, assisted by junior Bryony Striffler.

The Mighty Oaks notched one more goal in the second half at the 42nd minute by freshman Jessie Smith, the first goal of her collegiate career.

Solid goalkeeping was provided Kiki Hilmer and Megan Herbst, ensuring a shutout for the Mighty Oaks.

Following the game, the Barkeaters Cup trophy was presented to the women's soccer team by Bobcats Athletic Director James A. Tucker. After receiving the trophy, the Mighty Oaks team captains returned the trophy to the Bobcats to honor the loss of Calderone.

With the win, the ESF women's soccer team improves to 9-1 and have a #2 ranking nationally in the USCAA power rankings. The team plays again Oct. 14 at Cazenovia College.
