Women's Soccer Team Goes 2-0 over the Weekend

As part of back-to-back games over the weekend, the women's soccer team traveled first to Delhi on Sept. 19 to take on the Broncos.

The Mighty Oaks let in an early goal by Delhi going scoreless and down 1-0 at half time. With 20 minutes left in the second half, senior Bryony Striffler got the Mighty Oaks on the board with a rocket top-right corner goal tying the score up 1-1. The Mighty Oaks fought hard to try and gain the lead. The hard work paid off when junior Heather Carl found sophomore Giselle Schrieber for a 15-yard fitness shot that landed in the back of the goal, giving the ESF a 2-1 lead. Schrieber's game-winning goal was her first collegiate goal ever.

The following day, the women's team faced its cross-town rivals, Onondaga Community College, in the annual Queen of the Hill cup. The Mighty Oaks won last year's game 1-0 over the Lazers. ESF didn't waste anytime asserting themselves in this game as sophomore Lauren Archer scored on a breakaway goal less than two minutes into the game. The Mighty Oaks controlled possession for most of the first half almost netting another goal at the 27-minute mark but the shot by sophomore Natalee Wrege kissed the post.

Going into the second half with a 1-0 lead, ESF continued to maintain possession, creating several scoring chances. At the 62-minute mark, Striffler found the back of the net putting the Mighty Oaks up 2-0. Onondaga, sensing the urgency, stepped up its attack and scored with 10 minutes remaining to make the score 2-1. The Mighty Oaks countered with a goal by Striffler, her second of the game, assisted by Carl, sealing the win for ESF.

Sophomore goal keeper Megan Herbst had a strong game in the net, saving seven shots and allowing only one goal.

The women's soccer team play again Sept. 24 at SUNY Canton.
