Soccer Season Recap

(Recap provided by head coach Adam Scalisi and assistant head coach Mandy DaRin)

Men's Soccer Season Recap
The 2019 season opened strong with a 5-0 victory over FLCC.  The team was working with a young central formation, 3 freshmen taking starting positions.  Their inexperience made for some close calls early in the season but they quickly found their stride.  A notable performace was a commanding 9-0 win over rival Paul Smith's to win the Barkeater Cup during the Mighty Oak's senior game taking place on alumni weekend.  The team finished with an 8-4-1 record, narrowly missing post season in the HVIAC conference championship game, losing 1-0 to Berkeley who went on to win the national title.

Men's Soccer Seniors
Dan Pelletier: Through Dan's years here at ESF, he has been a consistent contributor to team energy and enthusiasm.  While a physical player, he was also seen by his peers as the team intellect, always asking the question that everyone was either afraid of or didn't think to ask.
Evan Weig: After a rough start with injuries when first joining the Mighty Oaks as a transfer, Evan earned himself a starting position by his senior year.  Although a physical center back, he wins the award for collegiate athlete that never enjoyed doing anything athletic.
Luke Day: Often commented on by other coaches, Luke has been a fearless, aggressive player all of his 3 years with ESF.  Scoring during crucial points in games and seasons as well as being incredibly effective with his defensive pressure.  Luke finishes his senior season as a team captain.

Men's Most Improved
The Most Improved Player for the 2020 season has earned this award on many fronts.  Laying a foundation early in his career made up for hard work and a never-give-up attitude, he has built on that string base skill sets and a team-first philosophy that was a significant factor in the the teams success this year.  The award goes to Liam "Country" Hanley

Men's Most Valuable
The Most Valuable Player for this season can best be described as reliable.  In a game as complex and varied as soccer, a player who can be consistently depended on to perform at a high level is indispensable to a coach and to their teammates.  No matter how a game was going, this player was level headed and laser focused, proving that control of the game has a hugely positive impact.  The 2020 MVP is junior captain, Ian Foote

Women's 2019 Soccer Season Recap
The Lady Oaks clinched the league title for the fifth-straight year for, and went on to claim the 2019 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship. This would earn them the No. 2 seed in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) coaches poll, ESF (11-2, 3-0 HVIAC) and captured the HVIAC for the fourth-straight year and also claims the conference's automatic bid to the USCAA National Championship held from Nov. 7-11 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Women's Soccer Seniors
Becca Solomon: Becca has been a large contributor to the women's program over the years in many unique ways.  Stepping up and filling gaps on short notice when the roster needed it and was always prepared and willing to share with her teammates.   She battled through chronic injuries to be there to support her team.
Marissa Pompeii: Marissa was always a talented forward but she really came into her own her senior year.  Often competing against some of the biggest players on the field (center backs) she was fearless even after overcoming a serious eye injury her sophomore year.  She was a force to be reckoned with while she expanded her shooting range and capitalized on finesse goals through second and third efforts.
Alyssa Hughes: A repeat captain from her junior year, Alyssa finishes her senior season combining her game controlling experience gained during her underclassmen seasons with her team leadership skills that she had to use in full force after knee complications side-lined her during her junior year.  This caused her to have her most effective and influential season yet, ending her career on a high note earning multiple athletic accolades.
Mallory DeLanoy: Mallory has been a prime example of consistent hard work and focus producing quality results.  Always playing the mental side of the game as well as the physical, Mallory made consistent, team oriented decisions and progress until she earned a starting position.  Even through her successes, her top priority was always what was best for the team.
McKenna Pason: Mckenna Pason was a physical workhorse for the team during her entire career.  Taking on school, soccer and expanding roles in ROTC, she could always be counted on to never give up, mentally or physically.  Mckenna ends her soccer career as a two time captain and starting outside back.
Alexa Blunck: Alexa was due for a huge final season with the Mighty oaks and she completely seized that opportunity.  As a sophomore transfer into ESF, her first two seasons where stifled with illness and then severe injury.  By her senior year, she was ready to make an impact.  She was a catalyst player with energy and determination that her teammates fed off of throughout the season, proving that leadership comes in many forms.
Maureen McCarthy: Maureen had always been an enthusiastic and team oriented contributor to the Oaks but was challenged going into her senior season like no one had ever expected.  After a knee injury 6 months before the season followed by a slow and challenging recovery, Moe had to make mature decisions on how she could help her team.  She showed her true strength and incredible colors by how she poured into her teammates when she could not be on the field.  She may not realize the full impact she had but those efforts will always be irreplaceable.

Women's Most Improved
The women's Most Improved Player for the 2020 season grew in different ways as the season progressed.  She found her stride, her voice and her place on the team, motivating her teammates with her personal progress. This year's award goes to outside midfielder, Molly Reyngoudt

Women's Most Valuable
Our whole team votes on awards each year and aren't simply picked by the coaches.  With that being said, I am happy to say that the team is always very mature and insightful with their votes and doesn't fall into flippantly picking the highest scorer or most popular player.  Although this player has scored her fair share of crucial goals, her contributions to the team have expanded and evolved each season.  After working with her for four years, I am extremely proud to award the 2020 Most Valuable Player to Alyssa Hughes
